About Homegrown
A family of five building the education their kids deserve.
We're Vishaal and Nicole. We have three boys — Satori (9), Simran (7), and Silas (4). We live in Australia, we homeschool, and we got tired of waiting for someone else to build the education our kids actually need.
Why This Exists
Our kids are growing up in a world that's designed to make them consume. Every screen, every ad, every institution is optimised to turn them into compliant workers and eager buyers. That's not a conspiracy — it's a business model.
School teaches them to sit still, follow instructions, and memorise answers someone else decided were important. It doesn't teach them how money actually works, how to spot manipulation, how to think critically about the information they're fed, or how to build and fix things with their own hands.
So we started building what was missing.
What We Believe
- Kids deserve the truth. Simplified for their age, sourced, and honest — including when we're not sure or when we've changed our minds.
- Families learn better together. Every lesson is designed for the kitchen table, not the classroom. Discussion, not lectures.
- Knowledge should be free. We don't gate this behind a paywall because the families who need it most are often the ones who can't pay for it.
- Real skills matter. Knowing how to cook, fix a tap, grow food, and read a map isn't "extra" — it's essential knowledge that's been outsourced to the market.
- Question everything — including us. If we teach critical thinking, we have to model it. Every lesson has sources. Every claim can be checked. If we get something wrong, we say so.
Why No Social Media
You'll notice we're not on any social media platform. That's deliberate.
These platforms are engineered to capture attention, manufacture outrage, and keep you scrolling. They're the opposite of everything Homegrown stands for. We'd rather you spend 20 minutes at the dinner table with your kids than 20 minutes looking at our Instagram feed.
If Homegrown is good enough, you'll tell someone about it — not because we asked you to, but because your kid said something at dinner that stopped you mid-bite. That's the only marketing we need.
How It's Built
Every lesson follows the same structure:
- Introduction — why this matters to you, right now
- Main content — the actual knowledge, clearly explained and sourced
- Dinner Table Moment — one question or revelation designed to spark a real conversation
- Family Activity — something physical to do together, away from screens
- Dig Deeper — for curious kids who want to go further
- Sources — real references you can check yourself
Some lessons also include a "What We Got Wrong" section — because being honest about our own learning is part of the teaching.
How It's Funded
Homegrown is free for every family. No ads, no sponsorships, no data selling. We run Smart Carrot — an organic health and nutrition business — and that's what keeps the lights on.
If Homegrown has been valuable to your family and you'd like to help us keep building, there's a voluntary contribution option. No pressure. No access changes either way.
